Dual boot simultaneously

i am currently dual booting Windows XP and Ubuntu linux, but i hate having to restart my computer every time i want to switch OSes. is there any way to have both windows and linux boot at startup, and "log in" or out of one? like if i logged into windows and then later that day wanted to switch to linux, i want to just click to log out of windows, and go right into linux quickly. it seems like that should be possible, even though the RAM and CPU and everything would be sharing resources. does anyone know how this would be possible, or why it wouldn't be?

Re: Dual boot simultaneously

It is possible using VMware using Ubuntu as the host OS.
I have it setup to use my existing XP install.

Here's the guide I followed

Edit: Just don't follow the part about Automatix. VMplayer can be installed from Add/remove programs or Synaptic if you have the extra repositories on.
Also I didn't take the vmware converter method. I used the physical install.

Re: Dual boot simultaneously

i have tried some virtual OS stuff, but i used Virtualbox by Innotek. i was thinking more of loading both OSes without using virtual stuff. thanks though, i'll look into VMware.

Re: Dual boot simultaneously

I don't think there is a way to do this except virtually. I know newer Mac laptops have the ability to switch between OS, but I think it is virtual too, though not sure. But if anyone does know a way I would like to know, too.
