Linux Mint

Ive finally done it. Ive got my *** into gear, bought a neat 260GB Western D and hopefully itll be here start of next week.

Now, I need to know what I need to install to get my wireless card working, Ive run Linux from the boot CD but I still couldnt get either of the wireless programs to pick up my network. What program will do this job for me?? Its a D-Link Airplus G G510C adapter.

Also, what other programs can you reccomend, I seem to like the idea of the cube desktop, is there a way to get this on Linux Mint KDE??

Thanks, Its a whole new learning oppertunity for me, and I really look forward to it

Re: Linux Mint

What's a cube desktop? Do you mean Beryl/Compiz?

I went to Mint Forums and searched the two words - it looks like it's possible but it's all still somewhat experimental so no guarantees!

Mint has a reputation for being pretty good with wireless & ndiswrapper. Got no hits on your wireless card in "Search".

Re: Linux Mint

You can go one or another direction. You can spend A lot of time trying to fit the softwear to the hardware and if you wind up doing that you can call yourself a geek.Or you can go the dumb way and put hardware in that the softwear likes,If that is a laptop then look for a PIMCIA card that works. If it is a desktop find a PCI card that works.I make matches a lot loading Linux but I am not a geek.I just want my machine to work.Another thing to consider. The easy ones are live CDs/DVS in Linux. Most come live with a loader. You play the CD first to see if everything works. If not then consider what you may have to go through to solve that problem before you load.If it is not worth the time then try another version. You may try MEPIS 6.5 or PC Linux and everything match up.It is easy to find out live. But also once you have loaded one version of Linux on the HD it is easier to load the next in the same place. I tried about three versions of Linux on a new Compaq laptop that had the Airforce 1 card. None of those three liked the card.I could have added a PMCIA that worked if I wanted another option.

Re: Linux Mint

carsey -
If you've got broadband and a spindle of 700MB CD's it'll cost you almost nothing to try out some different distro's.
However, justo makes a good point - finding hardware that you know works may be a much more satisfactory solution. Trying to figure out how to make a reluctant card work can be - um - challenging to someone who knows what they're doing, and just plain impossible for the rest of us.

Good luck!

So far I have 2 pieces of hardware that don't work with Linux, a ADSL card which is difficult to get win32 drivers, and a WIFI modem, need to see if a newer kernel supports it.

Re: Linux Mint

I have one I really want to load.Sabayon Mini really looks good.Everything works but my Netgear MA 311 wireless card.I have another card in storage that may work but I have not been by to get it.I have a friend who tries all the tricks of modification of Linux to make things work but he finally decided it was not worth all the time and research. There are easy ways to get where you want to go without all the stress.<> I guess I would put it this way. A person new to Linux has too many things to learn at once.Everything is strange to him.He should first be able to get online and use the system as he learns more.Sitting there off line trying fit everything together will turn a new person away from Linux.I almost quit before I learned how to get Linux on dialup with hardware modems then trying to geek Yahoo IM into Linux was taking the fun out of the experience. If a guy can get online with the basic programs he can enjoy Linux and learn a little trick or two each day. Or he can go for it all.But atleast he is up and running in a few hours.
