Re: A fun Linux
DSL is actually 50 MB. The only problem is that it uses a kernel that is too recent for some old hardware.

Re: A fun Linux
DSL puts me in the mind of riding around in a submarine and you can't look out a window to see where you are going.Puppy has a desktop that gives a feeling you can see everything. But I have had troubles installing those two on hard drives and come up with all the programs working. I wish Puppy had an installer like PC Linux.I like the looks of the late version of Puppy.

Re: A fun Linux
OK,Here is another good small one.Under 400 mbytes. It goes up and gets me online with the netgear MA 311 wireless card. The small ones are nice for people new to Linux. One easy way is to find an old hard drive.Plug it as master and load up and run it.>>>> http://www.mcnlive.org/

Re: A fun Linux
Has anyone here tried Xubuntu? It's designed specifically for older computers, and uses the Xfce environment by default, because it's more lightweight.

Re: A fun Linux
I burned an ISO of the latest XUBUNTU.It looks neat but fails on my Netgear MA 311 wireless card.So I gave the CD away.

Re: A fun Linux
Ah, that's a shame. I've heard there are third-party programs, like Ndiswrap, that'll allow for most wireless pcmcia card compatibility.

Re: A fun Linux
There are.But why do the people drop the old drivers that worked before? If they are doing a later version to be called improved then it actually is a degraded version when it does less than before. It may work on your hardware OK though. There are so many Linux versions that I can pick ones that work without modifications.I think if I had to get into modifications I would just go on and make my own version of Linux.

Re: A fun Linux
Most drivers are still in the Kernel.
Updating between 2.6.19-gentoo-r6 to 2.6.20-gentoo-r7 (my kernel versions), my Ethernet stopped working, turned out an option that had previously been installed was now not installed. OSS is still in the kernel, even though ALSA has been out for awhile now. |
