Ok, I am new to Fedora, Linux in whole. I surfed the net, found Fedor for downlod, I click until I found Fedora 5, then the tree breaks down, to Many Folders, but inside of the list, are ISO files, and in there are individual Files in a folder called ISO, and the files inside are
FC-5=i386-disk1.iso, and are listed up to the 5th iso file. this is under the folder I386 There is another folder called PPC\ISO and have ISO files listed as: FC-5-ppc-disk1.iso, and are also up to the 5th CD, But there are other folders like OS, and Debug,, What i am confused is, I start downloading, and I notice My goodness, why are there so many copies of files that are similar. I also noticed the I386 files and PPC files, there is no autrun in none of these packed files. Therefore, no way to boot off of CD, Do I burn these individual files? And if so, which one for installing Fedora on a PC, no mac etc.. And there is an x86 folder that also has More ISO files, are these all for different Platforms of Windows? If so, which one do I need, and have the ability to Boot off of CD.. Please help.. I am totall confused... I am just learning, as of today, I have loaded FC 2 for about 4 days.. I am just starting our on Linux.. I am trying to get away from windows, and Internet Exploder,, Duddie |

Re: Hey Fellow Linux Pro's Linux software question
Well, sorry, you didn't get the Linux Pro. Just me.
Fedora is a huge download. Several CD's worth. That's why you see several .iso's. Each one should fit on a CD. Hope you've got broadband! PCLOS, Ubuntu, Mepis, etc. still fit on one CD. The new Linux Mint KDE full version got too big so they offer it as a DVD sized download. if your PC is a typical Intel or AMD PC, you want the i-386 version. I assume the "PPC" downloads are an Apple version, for the older ones with the IBM Power PC CPU's. Are you familiar with the typical process for converting the .iso to a bootable CD or DVD? Download the .iso to a convenient folder, then use your burning software to convert the image to a disc. If you simply copy the data to a CD it won't work. Notice that the .iso is one big file. A properly converted CD will have several folders and files. That's probly the easiest way to tell if you did it right or not. EDIT: Unless your heart is set on Fedora, why not try a simpler download first? Here's the Mepis download page. Click on a mirror near you and choose the 680MB download for a typical i386 PC, or the 690MB download for an AMD 64 bit PC. Mepis is only one of several user-friendly Linux distros. http://www.mepis.org/mirrors Last edited by Bartender; 04-23-2007 at 08:12 PM. |

Re: Hey Fellow Linux Pro's Linux software question
Bartender's right, in fact, the last time I downloaded Fedore 5, there were 5 disks, I believe. But if you're really new to Linux, I'd recommend you don't go with Fedora, but try either Linux Mint or simplyMEPIS. Fedora is not quite as pre-configured as those two I just mentioned.

Re: Hey Fellow Linux Pro's Linux software question
I hope that you have an extra PC to do experiments on Linux and you are not risking the only computer you have because the two guys above are right about starting with the smaller loads. With live CDs you get to try it on the machine before you load it.With FC you load it then work out the failures. For some reason I caused two hard drives to fail when I was loading FC a year ago.Kernel panic.I had it working in two PCs for awhile.I think I only loaded the first disk or maybe 1 and 2. I do Linux with several PCs and if one quits I can use another to get on line. You have to make sure which PC you have.A newer 64 bit or normal 32 bit motherboard/CPU. If you just have the normal PC then don't pick any ISO that has 64 in the numbers. There are 5 ISOs that make a 5 CD set and are numbered 1 thru 5 because you must load them in that order. So mark them with a felt pin as you burn them.I hope you know how to burn an ISO.If you have not burned an ISO then get some blank CDs and practice with Damn Small Linux because it is one small load to download and burn. Then when you have burned it you can try it live to see how well you have done.

AFAIC until you have at least one PC to play with, one that has nothing to do with your daily web browsing, email, etc. you should be very cautious about experimenting with Linux. And if you have to walk on eggs you're not going to learn much If everything goes extremely well with your test PC, then you can begin to work towards using Linux day in and day out. Of course, some people just plunge right in and things work out
