Hi all, I wanted to know if there is a site that shows screenshots of the linux desktop (maybe all the different version). I want to get more familar with linux without have to install all the versions on one computer.
does anyone know how to delete these post afterward or they just stay in cyberspace. |

A good place for screenshots:
http://shots.osdir.com/ Only a higher power than you or I can delete. You can edit for the first 20 min or so. |

Re: linux desktops screenshots
Well, depending on which distribution you're talking about, the appearance might be very similar. It all comes down to the window manager in use, whether it be GNOME, KDE, Xfce, fluxbox, or whatever is on there. In fact, appearances vary widely even with a single distribution because of this. Wikipedia's directory of free desktop environments ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Categor...p_environments ) is a good place to start, as many of these are made to run under Linux's X Window system.
In terms of functionality, the main difference between distributions of linux is the way the default install is performed, the package selection, and out-of-box kernel driver support.

Re: linux desktops screenshots
Ah ok, I see what you meant now.
Configuration is really one of the major drawbacks of all Linux distributions, as at least historically, configuration is done either by manually editing .conf files, or using many different, nonstandardized graphical programs. There's a little headway being made in trying to tie them all together, like the YaST configuration program which is used in the SuSE distribution, but I think at this point you would still also need to familiarize yourself with the standard methods as well in case something's off. It seems really odd and counter-intuitive that it would be this way, but it's a fact of life with Linux: All the programs you use are made by so many different people that it's really overwhelming. The variations between each aspect of configuration and use are difficult to handle at first, but as you gain familiarity with your system, it becomes easier.
