Kubuntu Questions

When I was previewing Kubuntu on my laptop, I could not access anything on my computer.

So I am a little concerned about installing it on my computer.

Do I lose my current OS (XP)?
Do I have dual boot option?

I guess, what happens when I install kubuntu?

Hi chienyu

If you let Kubuntu take over the whole Hard Drive you will lose your current OS.

BUT you do have a dual boot option and can have both.

You can just use one Hard Drive and repartition it. You have to create an empty space for Kubuntu to go into automatically. I used an easier way and put in a second Hard Drive. Windows stayed on the first Hard Drive, Linux went on the second.

Kubuntu is the same family as Ubuntu, Xubuntu and Edubuntu.

I quite like the Linux.com videos showing how to get, dual boot and install Ubuntu at http://tips.linux.com/article.pl?sid...&tid=50&tid=13
http://tips.linux.com/article.pl?sid...&tid=29&tid=46
http://tips.linux.com/article.pl?sid...tid=50&tid=131
http://enterprise.linux.com/article....1533204&tid=23

An alternative is to try Kubuntu as a virtual machine ON Windows. It is available free from VMware. To see Vmware in action look at the video called "How to avoid viruses by using free software to create a virtual machine" (?!) on http://video.google.co.uk/videoplay?...l+machine+home

Kubuntu Forums is a reasonable place. It is on http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?board=7.0

Is your current OS on a NTFS partition? (XP normally is). On the Live CD you'll need to mount the the NTFS partitions. If you install Kubuntu, you can have them mount automatically. If you have enough space on your hard drive, or better yet have a spare hard drive, then yes you can dual boot.

I do have a partition a C and D drive

I have a virtual drive H where I mounted the image to test out the kubuntu OS.

So if I install kubuntu on my D drive, I should have no problems? I won't lose anything from my current configuration?

Ok, if I understand you correctly you have:
Only one hard drive
Two partitions (C, D)
You won't lose anything as long as there is nothing on partition D:. If you have anything on that partition, it will be deleted when you format the partition.
Always backup important data before installing another OS. It's better to be safe than sorry.

Has anyone found a video to install VMWare Server? I'm playing the video referenced above but it's showing how to move around after the virtual app is up and running.

Bartender, please start a new thread for this.

@ chienyu,

I had a very similar setup. I had two partitions, C: and D:. What I did was backup the data on D: and then delete it. Then, I created a partition called D: that was half the size, and used the unpartitioned space to install Kubuntu.
