ubuntu 6.06 lts

hey linux gurus, ive been running an installed copy of knoppix on my system as a second OS for 2 years or so but i tought why not transform my laptop into a linux laptop since i dont game on it as much.

since i have tried ubuntu 64bit before for some testing and i liked the package but couldnt get WINE installed to work right.

well i went on the net last night and downloaded 6.06LTS Long Term Support, my question is whats better the LTS or the 6.10 ? im using the laptop for simple stuff like browsing typing stuff wifi related things and the ocasional STEAM game over WINE ...

i got 6.06LTS tonight will burn today and install it. any other presteps to take before throwing it on there ?

also is anyone running ubuntu with a WINE distro on it ?

will i be able to burn data cd's with it ? cause i take it on the road to transfer pictures so this is a necisity(sp?)

also can i watch DVD-s on it ?

the laptop is an averatec 5100
intel pentium m 1.3ghz
512mb ram
40gb harddrive
cd-rw dvd
integrated wifi
intel graphics

Well, I'm not a Ubuntu expert because I never liked it.
If software to burn & watch DVDs doesn't come pre-installed (I think it does, though) you can easily install it. As far as which one, you're probably better off with 6.06. See the article link below that describes the difference.

I have Gnome/Ubuntu but I mostly use KDE/Kubuntu.

The blog link is a bit dated now (January). Edgy Eft has been released as stable.

You can watch DVDs but you will need a seperate install. Look at Ubuntu Restricted Formats on https://help.ubuntu.com/community/RestrictedFormats To watch DVDs will mostly involve libdvdcss.

If you have a quick download Automatix2 is a useful script which downloads and installs lots of useful programs.

Linux has some catching up to do with 64 bit machines (it look like AMDs especially). No-one seems to have got Flash to work yet on 64s. The 32 bit install does work on 64 bit machines and Flash will work.

An interesting distro which has many non-free/propriatary programs installed, based on Ubuntu, is Linux Mint at http://www.linuxmint.com/20061113.html

any recommendations besides ubuntu that are simple and will do the job ? i saw that all the games i want to run with WINE run under UBUNTU in gold or platinum status so thats a plus !

i have run suse 7.0 and 10.1 before also madriva 64bit but reverted back to ubuntu cause it was simpler to me.

knoppix is good but i dont like it as a full install its a great package as a live cd but as a full install eh im not so fond of it but might give it a shot as it is a dang good distro with everything preinstalled :p

If you're looking at other distros, definitely try PCLinuxOS (link in my sig). It's really good. Has lots of software preinstalled. It's based on Mandriva, and in my opinion much much better.
arochester, it's still pretty much the same. Edgy Eft will not get the support of 6.06.

ill definatly give that a shot aswell, its knoppix, ubuntu pr pclinuxos. well see wich one detects my wifi adapter if one of them does then ill be happy and going with that one as i want minimal effort of trying to get everything setup for regular usability.

Right. WiFi can be complicated to set up if it's not detected. I read that the Linux Mint stable version that was released yesterday includes wifi drivers for 40 different cards.
