How to install java run time env.. &

Hi all

In Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft) how do I install Java Runtime Environment?

I needed it while surfing online, its plugin mainly and when after downloading it via the webpage, it was a bin file. So I left it on my desktop, and then followed instructions using Terminal found here: http://java.com/en/download/help/500...selfextracting

The self-extracting file not the RVM.

But it kept failing authentication after typing su and hitting enter followed by password:

"su Authentication failure
Sorry!"

So what could be wrong there?
-------------
Secondly, are there any Firefox extensions out there or very minimal? I found very little.

-------------
Thirdly, how do I uninstall something.. is it through the SPM?

------------
Fourthly, when theres mention of KDE, GCI etc in the repository (SPM), what will function with my distro (its GNOME based) ?

If only GNOME stuff, how do I filter it out?

------------
Lastly, whats a good photo editor to use available?

I only found the pre--installed GIMP.

Appreciate the help.

There are quite a lot but it depends what you are looking for

That's a clean way. Go for Mark for Removal rather than Mark for Complete Removal. That way you can bring something back if you change your mind - otherwise it's totally gone

Most of it will work

Again it depends what you want. At a simple level you can use Picassa...

ImageZoom, Quicknote or Clippings are a few? I couldn't find them.

There's an Add/Remove option in Application menu here too that works well.

I would I know if they work priorly?

Yes Google Picasa2 is good... but its not found in my repository. So where can I get it from?

Addition: Any way to check for all the recent history (i.e. logs, docs, pics, net history)?

I'm aware of the Recent Documents option under Places. I'm after the explorer sort of location rather.

I've had 4 crashes today whilst I was in the middle of something. I lost everything with 4 bug reports in it already! GIMP was one that crashed them... and my desktop rearranged itself, lost wallpaper etc. Just what I didn't expect.

Generally see the Unofficial Ubuntu 6.10 (Edgy Eft) Starter Guide at http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu_Edgy

If you have a fairly quick download the best thing is to install Automatix2 at http://ubuntuguide.org/wiki/Ubuntu_E...2C_and_Xubuntu

Automatix is a script which will download and install lots of very useful stuff - including Picassa

Excellent! Automatix2 gave me 4/5 of all that I needed here.

Now only the TB/FX extensions that either do not work or are not available. I have none in yet as the ones that re there do not work anyway (greyed out).

Thanks

Firstly, the Firefox extensions are not working at all. even Imagezoom which is included in Edgy Eft by default.

Secondly, installing from Automatix2 gave me errors:

Code:
home@home-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install sun-java5-jre sun-java5-plugin
Password:
E: dpkg was interrupted, you must manually run 'dpkg --configure -a' to correct the problem.
So that leaves me stuck and reading.

Thanks. I was on there and it wasn't functioning. I test and report Mozilla products, so I'm aware of the extension site

Just that some of them were not functioning in ubuntu and yet I have them fully functioning in Mac and Win.

-BTW, Java RE will not install giving me errors yet.

-Plugins/addons for Fx/Tb I'll fetch manually.

-From the SPM I installed 7zip. Its no where to be found on the PC.

-How can I change to root user? It won't allow me most privileges I need until I change to that. If I "switch user" the reply I get is "admin cannot use this login page".

OR is there a way to make ME the admin?

Thanks for your help

Recognising that our repositories will be different I cant find 7zip. I can find p7zip and p7zip-full.

Ubuntu keeps you insulated from "root". When you sudo and give your password you are temporarily "root". When you Synaptic and give your password you are temporarily "root". When you go to Kmenu>System Settings and it asks for administrator and you give your password you are temporarily "root" - but don't go down the road of trying to permanently sign in a "root"

I have that, yes. 7-zip is the name of the app as was developed. p is added for the Linux version. Can you install it?
After installation, of the -full, when I go into check my programs installed, I get no mention of it anywhere. Yet going back into SPM gives me the option of removing and its highlighted with the checkbox removed to portray that its installed.

OK. I realized this when it asked me for password i.e. when changing anything in the Administrator tab. However, that would mean that while I'm in "root" as I type in the password, it still won't let me run/open anything to install.

If I can't install this software, I can't use Ubuntu basically.

Appreciate your help.

Yes I can install p7zip. Have you got the front ends XArchive or Xarchiver too?

Ok. I've added more repositories by removing the '#' from infront of multiverse in sources.list

I've been able to download many more apps through Automatix and Synaptic now. I also typed -configure -a and that resolved another of the dpkg issue.

However:

a) I cannot move a folder into the /file system/usr/lib/ location, remove it nor move anything else in there (I have 2 Thunderbird's installed. One I'd like to remove is in that location. One I'd like to move in is elsewhere)

b) Still 7zip will not work. Now, its in that /file system/usr/lib as an installation as I reinstalled it. But I can't access it anywhere else and its not in my software installed list

c) My installation has started acting erratically with opening of notes, right-click menu opening, loading highlighting, not typing or carrying out a command I make everywhere, even here or on the desktop! CPU is jamming @ 100% and I don't know whats its caused by. I'm getting too many crashes aswell.

Help!

I didn't understand the front ends bit.. can you explain it a little please?

To update:

I've sorted most of the problems out now but the screen. For some reason using Add/Remove was better than the Synaptic App Manager.

Now I have a screen that pains my eyes @ 1024x768 65Hz while it should be 96DPI res.

Thanks.

The screen size is generally changed via Kmenu>Computer Administration>Monitor and display.

There seem to be some problems with Flat Screens. I have a CRT. Flat Screens need to go somewhere else to change refresh rate.

My System

sorry for my absence...been rather busy lately. A nice photo organizer & simple editor is digikam. My favourite.
Your screen problem...is it in all distros or just the one?

Its OK.

I've downloaded Digikam just this morning.

Screen problem is in all distro's. I think its a configuration issue. I need to get the display res @ 96DPI and all will be fixed.

Thanks to all.
