Don't worry about the hard drive size. won't be a problem with the latest Linux.
If you're new to Linux, you might want to try the Ubuntu family, (Ubuntu, Kubuntu). Or Xandros, Suse PCLinuxOS. All those are free & more user-friendly. Check out DistroWatch for more info, download links, screenshots, etc.
