How old is your version of Gaim? If it came on the RH-9 disks, it may just be outdated. The messenger services update their softwares from time to time, and older messenger clients are then left out in the cold. See Downloads - Gaim

right! what I've done

i've downloaded the updated version of gaim from the link which was quite easy, i save the .rpm file to the root/home location and unpacked it, it came back with the following error message " gtkspell.os.0 is missing" now, I downloaded the gtkspell.os.0 file with no errors from the same site but where does it unpack the file? so I can copy/move it to the lib/gaim/lib directory!

cheers

Where the file was saved to depends on where your browser is set to save it to. While Firefox typically saves to /home/*you*/Desktop by default, other browsers may save elsewhere. And it can be set to save to any folder that the user has write permissions to. You can typically check in your browser through the "edit" /preferences/downloads/ to see where it currently saves. Or "tools"/Downloads should get you the list of recent downloads, and a link to open each.

Sorted !

I had to completely remove all dependence files of Gaim from /usr/lib and /usr/share before installing the new upgraded version of Gaim, I have ran the new software an it is a lot better an more user friendly, setup my msn account no problems an works a treat!

the only thing is now, is that my life has become empty an un-challenging!!!!! so my next task is to network my windows xp base unit with my linux laptop!!!!

cheers dude for all ya help an advice.

My System

Good luck with that next task.

By the way a quick warning - if your XP machine's hard drive is NTFS, do not write to it using Linux. Its NTFS support is still experimental.
