need help with FC5

I just bought a new computer. I wanted to install Ubuntu as a second OS.
But Ubuntu is not yet available for my mother board. Some problem with the dvd driver.
So while waiting for the new Ubuntu I installed FC5 which is compatible with me dvd.
The problem was that I couldn't boot windows at all. I could see windows booting, but it would just restart again. I couldn't boot in safe mode either.
So I had to format my hard drive. I didn't know how to fix and it was a new install anyway.

So I have no idea what turn bad, and I'm kind of scare to install it again.

Any idea of what could have turn bad?

My mother board is an Asus P5B-E
intel core 2 duo 6400E

Thank you

Yvon

i believe that this should be in the windows support forum.
But

is it a pre built PC or did you build it yourself?

there might be a hardware conflict or something wrong with the install.

Yvon, possibly the Windows partition was damaged during the installation of FC5. Did you defragment your hard drive before the install? It's very important to do that.

No I didn't.
It might have been the problem. You think if I defragment it should be ok?
Can I try to install it again with confidence if I defragment first?

Also, I will install another hard drive, will it change anything if I install it on a second hard drive instead of a different partition?

I used Linux a few times before, but I'm still a newbie :)

THank you

Yvon, a separate hard drive is always the best way to do it. Not that just a separate partition won't work, I've done it many times like that and am currently running FC5 on the same hard drive as my Windows install.

Yes, defrag before you install, I can't guarantee you that it will install correctly, but it's worth a try. Also sometimes a reinstall will fix a lot of probs.
Make sure you backup any valuable files you may have before installing another OS! It's always better to be safe than sorry. Also let the FC5 installer do the partitioning, rather than use a 3rd-party software like Partition Magic.
