It is great that you want to learn linux. First thing you need to do is download a distrobution of linux to play with. The most popular choices right now may be Fedora Core, Ubuntu and OpenSuse. All of these are great version of linux, and they are fun to learn.
Books may help you learn, however they are outdated quickly. The best resources for learning linux and is to read forums on Linux. linuxforum.com is a good resource for linux information, along with resources on common linux services such as MySQL and Apache. I would definatly check it out. Have fun! George. |

I haven't laid eyes on this book yet, but it's gotta be pretty helpful
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/re.../dp/0132435942 for Ubuntu anyways! By the way, how do you guys make a link hide underneath a word? That's so cool. It can't be hard, but I haven't figured it out. Hey, take a peek thru the latest MaximumPC magazine (Holiday 2006). They said Gentoo is too hard, so don't feel bad. |

To create a link under under a work, click the link button
Type the URL for the link You will notice that a URL line will be displayed. The URL you are linked to will be displayed twice in the URL line. the URL that is NOT in the quotes is what is displayed in the message, so you can change that. Have fun. |

I've never tried Gentoo, but that's what I've heard. Not for beginners. Knoppix also, I believe.

I strongly suggest that you DO NOT try Gentoo unless you have a very good understanding of Linux and compiling the software yourself. Most linux distros will install in under an hour. Gentoo will install in over 3 - 7 days if you want Gnome/KDE (this depends on how fast your CPU is). Of the 5 or so Gentoo installs that I've done, I've yet to have one go from start to finish without running into several problems with packages not compiling properly. The worst was when OpenOffice failed late in the compile. The problem was that it literally took half a day to compile OpenOffice, so it took me about 3 days just to fix the problem. It's not a simple fix it and see if it works, if not, try again. It was more like search for solutions, try it, wait 12 hours, search for more solutions, try it, etc... In the end, I was a bit over aggressive with my optimisation flags and some flags were no longer used because they caused problems, but the documentation wasn't updated at that point.
However, once you have a good grasp of Linux, Gentoo is a good distro to see just how well you know Linux because it forces you to basically start from scratch. You pick what gets installed and then you have to configure it by hand. And when problems do occur, you can test how well your problem solving skills are when things don't work as intended. By installing Gentoo (or any other distro that you install from scratch), you get a very good understanding of Linux that you can't get from any of the pre-packaged distro's. I'll never again use anything other then Gentoo on my main computer.
