Linux Help
Ok, I need someone who knows Linux inside and out because to do what I want may not even be possible without designing my own driver and theres no way I'm doing that so anyway heres my question: I just installed Linux Mandrake 8.2 (I think .2) anyway their latest release, I got to say allots happened in the old Linux field since Red Hat 5.0. I was very impressed with the system all around. But now my problem, I'm using a 3Com(3CCFE574BT) 10/100 LAN card for the network connection, now the card is on its way out I just don't feel like going out and buying another one, see it will only maintain network connectivity if you set it @ 10 and not 100, (this happens on every OS on multiple computers so I'm not looking for a fix to this problem) Now in the Windows environments its no problem you can set it to only connect at 10 off the Network Properties, However in Linux I cant seem to find where to go to do this, it appears to be auto-checking the connection and setting it to 100 right at boot-up, so I need to know if theres a config file I could edit, or if there is anyway to set the card to not auto-detect but to restrict connection speed to 10. Any help with this matter would be appreciated.

Scrapped the 10/100 card and used my USB Xircom PortGear | Ethernet card with it. Anyone know where to get a driver for it??
:( Never mind I wrote the driver program for it myself... If any other Linux users out there need a Xircom PortGear USB | Ethernet card driver for their Linux box, let me know. :).

A man who writes his own drivers- and in one day. This time you have impressed me.
I'm putting Red hat as a second os on a box I'm building for my son. I'm buying the last piece (a cd rom that works) tomorrow and will have it loaded by monday night. I'm sure I will need help with the modem because I have never been able to get linux to talk to a modem. Maybe if we go step by step in this forum- allot of other people would be not so afraid of it. Interesting OS, I would like to like it.

:) It works so far, had a couple problems with it at first, plus I had all the specs for the hardware so it wasn't that much of an accomplishment. But thanks :)
Is you son good with computers?, he must be if he's gonna be using Linux.. its a good system to learn in my own opinion. Good luck on the install.

JAMMAN, I don't know which version of Red-hat your installing but if you don't have a problem with Mandrake, Iv got 8.2 running now and it is pretty impressive compared to the older versions and configures a lot more hardware automatically (very nice) if you want I could send you a copy. Let me know :)

It's in the garage- hang on a for a couple..(tick tock tick tock) Ok, I'm back now. I own Redhat 6.1 and Caldera 2.3. Thanks for the offer, but If the new versions are that much better I'll attempt to buy it locally first. Gotta support the software, man!
My son is only 5 but it is scary the way he fishes through the menus and changes his screen savers and wallpaper. He took a bunch of my cd's one time and I found him in his room looking at them in the windows explorer- for files with the .avi extension because he knew they were small movies. He had allready copied two or three to his desktop. He's had a p300 since he was 3ish, I'm upgrading him to a p3 800 and a better vid card to get his "Primal Prey" game off my computer. It won't run on his 300.

Your son's Comp is running faster than the p3 I'm running @ work, and we're a gov't funded facility...LOL It sounds like he's gonna do some great things... but with all the knowledge of windows and linux, you might want to watch when he gets into languages and the internet ( The plot from Hackers all over again :) you may end up raising the next Kevin Mitnick :D)
