Roll Eyes Modem errors with Gentoo

I recently installed Gentoo at some one elses house on cable internet. Using emerge --fetchonly of course. When i'm at my place, and emerging all my crap. I was told to emerge kdm before kde , unsure if that made a difference or not so I did fine kde doesn't work that's cool I just wanted to try out the new version. But eh after emerging xfce4 and trying to eh connect via wvial it wouldn't let me. To make the long story short it gave me an error (4) for pppd. Figured if i recompiled the kernel because gentoo is stubborn and doesn't want to accept that . It ended up connecting but then shortly after it would disconnect with pppd error 16 , now I noticed some one on here had the same error after switching from Mandrake to Gentoo. But I belive that person had a usb modem. Mine is a US Robotics 56K FAX INT and it worked perfectly with my freebsd partition, so eh whats the deal i'm trying to figure that crap out ? :\

I've never used gentoo or tried to connect through a dial up modem, but I think I found a a site to help ya:

http://www.linuxforums.org/forum/lin...t-connect.html

Don't know if these two will help, found another forum (linuxquestions.org) where someone was having this problem on another linux...see if these apply:

http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=71749
http://www.linuxquestions.org/questi...threadid=25214

and lastly:

Sorry I can't give you any specific instructions. Hope this helps.
