you might get away with replacing the board if you can find an exact copy of your drive .. what I don't know is whether the information regarding physical layout and allocated space / tracks is kept on the hard disk itself or within a map on the circuit board. now with higher volume drives the disk surface is tested for defects and this info is held somewhere so that the drive is aware of where it can and cannot write.
