K, I'll try that tomorrow.

I don't have much hope for this, unfortunately- I tried a couple of times from a cold start today, and got the same result :(

If all else fails, I'm going to use my usb enclosure and see what S.M.A.R.T. says about it. If it's dead, oh well- it's just another opportunity to get a larger hard drive and a saner install of Linux.
