Graphics card overheating - system shutdown

A friend has installed a new graphics card and he is having the above problem. His system is:

Asus AAT??? motherboard (Nforce chipset - SLI)
AMD 4200 dual core
4x512 Kingston Hypermax memory
1 250gb SATA HDD
1 CD Writer
Brand new 600w psu (can't remember make - sorry)

Upto date ATI drivers, chipset driver and he's flashed the bios to most recent version.

Has installed a new ATI X1950 pro. The fan on it in running maximum but the pc gives an "clock freq is being lowered to cool the system" or words to that effect. Then it just shuts off.

Any ideas?
