I basically you can install two OS's but youd probably have to split one of the above partitions to two.

A good version of Linux to get started on is UBUNTU, do a google search for it. As for what linux is for, what do you mean? Its basically a OS, but more of a command line input OS in the terminal, and its open source so its free. Its similar to MS DOS. You can also get X Window plugins to make it look like windows, so you can interact with it as you would windows rather than typing all the commands like change directory etc.
