Presario LCD Issue

Just looking for some suggestions here.
I have an older Compaq Presario 1800T notebook that has been experiencing some problems with the display. When using the computer the screen goes completely snowy and I can hear a loud arcing/hissing/static sound coming from the bottom of the screen. I took this to mean that the inverter was bad, and have ordered a replacement, however I'm not certain this is the issue. The issue can be resolved by moving the screen back and forth to find the "sweet spot". It seems much like a broken wire, but I can't figure out where it might be.

The ribbon cable also looks like it's been exposed to heat and is slightly browned on the edges, but moving this around while the display is on does not seem to make any difference. I'm tempted to try to replace this next, but I dont' want to spend the 80 dollars for a new cable unless I'm sure it's the problem.

If anyone has any ideas or suggestions, I would greaty appreciate it. Thanks for taking the time to read through this. !
