What is the ideal way to run a SATA HDD on my current mobo? With just the adapter to SATA?

I just D/L the diagnostic test for my Western Digital HDD and it passed the quick test and the deeper complete test. If this is a hardware problem I'm leaning toward my PSU as the faulty part. Its a "Colorcases 400 watt". I just D/L the ultimate troubleshooter to find out if its a software problem. Any input?
