I haven't found the root cuase, but did learn more history today.... (would have been nice to know before). This laptop was already brought to a shop!! They told them the mobo was bad and had to be replaced..... but they also physically broke the right rear corner of the casing!!!!
I was originally told that break had been there for awhile (it's not the cause/source as it happened After the laptop failed, and while in the posession of a "repair" shop). While not the cause, it makes me wonder how good their work was to begin with.
I took it apart enough to see the AC input jack (through the plate above the keyboard, beside the hinge). A repair has been attempted on it already. It is all potted around the input jack. I think it's time to tear it all the way down and see exactly how good that repair was, the potting could be masking a break.
