[SOLVED] router/modem problems

I recently got a WNR854T netgear router to replace my old BEFW11S4 V.2 linksys router. I have verizon DSL. When hooking up the new router, it detected my IP as being static, which it is not. At the time I just ignored this and went ahead and inputted my verizon user name and password into the PPPoE settings. However, the new router would not connect to the internet; didn't even get assigned an IP address. After doing some research, I decided to make sure all the settings on my modem (Westell A90-210015-04) were correct since I'd only looked at its settings once or twice years ago when I set up the network in the first place. When I connected my computer directly to the modem, I discovered that my computer was not being assigned an IP by it either. I am positive it used to because I used to have problems with my router overheating and shutting off, so I would occasionally plug a computer directly into the modem and bypass the router to avoid this (I have since relocated the router to a location with better ventilation). In addition to my computer being forced to assign itself an IP, I cannot connect to the internet through the modem directly, nor can I even access its settings via 192.168.1.1. I am at a loss for what I should do, because the modem still works just fine with the linksys router, so I'm not sure if there's really any problem with it. If anyone has any suggestions they would be welcome.
