Maxtor 6Y160P0 - F: not accessible corrupt and unreadable error message

HI , I have 2 HD's in my system the Maxtor 6Y160P0 being the slave drive (with most of my important work on ffs!!!) , anyway until yesterday it was booting up fine....and Windows was automatically running a CHKDSK on F: each time I started up the pc....but for some reason it is not automatically doing the CHKDSK anymore and when Windows starts up I cannot access anything on the F: HD.

I have looked in the device manager section and it says F: is Healthy (Active) and it also is being detected in the BIOS

Also tried the Command prompt - CHKDSK /f f: but it said it could not determine volume or state and the CHKDSK was aborted !!!

Has anyone got any idea what I can do to get all my files back off this HD?

If so , you are a legend !!!
