Idea Re: How to add Ram chip?

That looks like you have removed the wrong cover, possibly more in the centre of the back ? probably the back of the CPU at a guess so close that panel up again.
Now I think I know where the confusion is coming from here, just went back to the manual I linked and it only took me to the index, so I navigated to the manual again and it was different, turns out they have 2 manual's, so what I've done is taken screenshot's of the two different backs to show you what to look for and hopefully where, then I'll post the clear one showing the ram, your may vary but with these you should be able to see what and how to do.

I'll also quote their guide to doing it here as well for you.
Quote:
Memory upgrade
Memory is expandable to 2 GB, employing DDR266/333 256MB/512MB/
1GB SDRAM modules. Two DDR DIMM slots. The computer supports
shadow RAM.
There are two memory slots on your computer, one of which is
occupied by standard memory. You can upgrade memory by installing
a memory module into the available slot, or replacing the standard
memory with a higher-capacity memory module.

Installing memory
Follow these steps to install memory:
1 Turn off the computer, unplug the AC adapter (if connected) and
remove the battery pack. Then turn the computer over to access
its base.
2 Remove the screw from the memory cover (a); then lift up and
remove the memory cover (b).
3 Insert the memory module diagonally into the slot (1), then gently
press it down until it clicks into place (2).
4 Replace the memory cover and secure it with the screw.
The computer automatically detects and reconfigures the total
memory size.

Hopefully now you will be able to achieve your goal.
