Hi j1477,
Yes, a repair reinstall of XP may work. But, before we do that, let’s make sure that there is no malware present in your system. If there is, that might muck up the repair reinstall of XP.
OK, let’s do this next.
Please download
Flash_Disinfector.exe by sUBs and save it to your desktop:
NOTE: In the event you already have Flash_Disinfector, this is a new version that I need you to download.
- Double-click Flash_Disinfector.exe to run it.
- Follow any prompts that may appear.
- Wait until the program has finished scanning, then please exit the program.

I would strongly suggest that you uninstall
iMesh and
WinMX Music because they usually come bundled with malware. You canreplace them with a more reputable P2P program listed at this site:
http://p2p.malwareremoval.com/
NEXT:
Please open
Notepad (Start -> Run -> type
notepad in the Open field -> OK) and copy and paste the text present
inside the code box below (don't forget to copy and paste REGEDIT4 as well):
Code:
REGEDIT4
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MountPoints2\{64dc6280-d544-11db-975b-806d6172696f}]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MountPoints2\{64dc6282-d544-11db-975b-806d6172696f}]
[-HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\MountPoints2\{64dc6283-d544-11db-975b-806d6172696f}]
Save this as
fix.reg and change the "
Save as type" to "
All Files" and place it on your desktop.
It should look like this:
Double-click on it and when it asks you if you want to merge the contents to the registry, click "
Yes" or "
OK". You should receive a message that it was successful.
In case you still are unsure on how to create a REG file, please take a look
HERE with screenshots.

Let’s uninstalling and reinstalling your IE and see if that will solve the problem.
To uninstall and reinstall Internet Explorer:
- Go to Start -> All Programs -> Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs.
- Select Add/Remove Windows Components from the left pane, uncheck Internet Explorer to uninstall it, then click the Next button and follow the prompts to exit.
- Please reboot your computer.
- Then do the above steps again, but this time check Internet Explorer to reinstall it, click the Next button and follow the prompts to exit.
- Reboot your computer one more time to allow the changes to take effect.
Do the same for Yahoo Messenger and let me know if that resolves the problem.

If the above didn’t work for IE, use Mozilla Firefox and try to download this tool to fix IE:

Let me know how things go.
