(resolved)CD drive not found.

this seems to be a common problem- but i have not found a solution that has worked for me yet...

I have recently replaced the HDD on my laptop - prompting a vanilla install of windows XP pro. The problem is that I cannot access the combination DVD/CDR drive under windows.

tracing the problem back to source, I see that...
1- there is no CD-Drive listed under device manager
2- there are no problems with any other devices listed in device manager.
3- the entries for ATAPI CD model & ATAPI CD serial number in BIOS are disabled
4- there is no entry under 'CD-DRIVES' in the boot order.

the usual solution (looking on other forums) is down to dodgy CD writing software (MS KB 314060). This does not apply to me - there are no upperFilters / LowerFilters registry entries for the CD drive in my registry.

got any ideas ?
