I think you may have just stumbled onto something.

Cloning requires a boot swapping process to complete the clonign operation

in as much as you have cloned to an external, the last swapping part of the operation never took place.

In your shoes; I would remove any data you have on the drive and reformat it from within disk managment

then you can re-clone if you want to, but make sure you DONT include any bootable options check boxes

USB drives can not be bootable drives under Win XP
