Have you tried going into the Bios and where you set it to SATA, try setting it to SATA + PATA to see if it helps. You didn't say what board you have, but in my Asus P5DGC it has this option and might help, you can always go back and set it back to SATA only. Also, I had this exact problem when I installed more then 1 SATA drive on that same board I mentioned before and a Bios Flash completely cleared it up.
