processes needed to run a laptop?

So.. I just got this new laptop for Christmas. My friend says that they download a bunch of crap on them that you dont really need and that you end up with a bajillion processes running and the comp will run really slowly.
My laptop is currently running 60 processes. Do I really need that much stuff going on at the same time on this laptop?
Its a Toshiba, it runs wireless internet, I use McAfee as an anti-all bad stuff (yeah, I know its supposed to bog the comp down, but it's working really well..).
There are 26 processes that have their user name as "Andrea", 3 that say "LOCAL SERVICE", 2 that say "NETWORK SERVICE", and 29 that say "SYSTEM".
The idea being that my friend wants to reinstall windows XP on my laptop, does anyone know about how many processes I really need or if this is just going to be a very bad idea?
Thank you!
