DONT open the drive case!
in your shoes I would send the drive back to the manufacturer with instructions that you want the same drive back!
you may get lucky and do as Done has suggested, I would bring it to a tech shop. Many colleges have computer departments that would love to be able to demonstrate such a fix to the students.
