Another option would be to use a live distro of Linux like Mepis or Knoppix. I have used Mepis in the past to recover files on my hard drive and transfer them to an external drive.

Essentially you load and run the linux OS from your hard drive. The OS runs temporarly in your systems RAM. The nice thing about a Linux OS on CD Rom is that you can use your computer while you are trying to repair it. I was able to ask questions on this site using my WiFi and the built in browser. It was pretty handy.
