slow gameplay issues

I have just recently bought a radeon x1300 pci video card. Now, yes, i know this isn't the best video card out on the market but my board didnt have a pcie slot and i atleast thought it would be able to play games at moderate graphic levels. I have Far Cry and Madden 2007 and i am experiencing very slow and choppy gameplay with Madden 2007 even on very low graphics levels and i can actually play Far Cry at the lowest levels without much choppy gameplay. But, i am wondering how to get the most out of this video card and wondering if anyone knew what i could upgrade on my computer that would improve my gameplay speeds without buying a new mother board and video card.

computer specs:

windows xp home edition
intel pentium 4 cpu 2.80 ghz
512 mb ram
radeon x1300 pci 256 mb
