After doing what Indoril said, if that doesn't fix the problem, try this:
Right-click The Sims 2 shortcut on the desktop. In the line labeled target, that ends in .exe" add a space and a -w to the end of it, so it looks like this:
.exe" -w
That will force the game to run in a window. I've been told this fixes a lot of display errors (I had a different error that was fixed with this method). If your computer can run the game a high resolution then you will barely notice the fact it's in a window.
