Go to control panel, administrative tools, computer managment, then disk management under storage. To the right you'll see a list of active hard drives. To the bottom right, if you scroll down you should see the external drive. Go to it and right click and go to "change drive letter and paths". Change the drive to another letter (J: or I: depends on you). Sometimes the drive letter needs to be changed in order for windows to recognize it.
