Hi and welcome to the forums. It sounds like the sensor inside the headphone jack is not working properly. As you may have guessed, it should automatically switch over to headphones and stop playing audio out of the laptop's speakers. Try using a cotton swab and gently clean the inside (could be a contact issue?). Do not wet the cotton swab. If not, I suggest fulfilling your warranty to have that part replaced.
