My System

All you have to do is short the green wire on the main 20/24 pin ATX cable to any ground (a black wire). According to the ATX spec, the PSU should work fine with no load. Crappy PSUs have been known to occasionally kill themselves when powered up unloaded but it's very rare.

I've used ATX PSUs in electronics projects. You might take a look at my page on the subject if you haven't done it before. Some PC PSUs can be a little persnickety compared to regular power supplies.
