I've been trying to think what could be going on here and re-reading what has been said and done. I am wondering whether the BIOS is trying to put it into RAID mode despite the fact that you haven't actually asked it too.
I know that windows requires a ICH driver in order to recognise the drive as a SATA and at least in my case that meant installing a RAID driver (I also have ASUS mobo) However I only have one SATA drive ..
might be time for me to RTFM again ...
