I too never saw any mention of this being a 500GB drive SATA

.. what version XP are you using?

That size drive requires XP SP1 or 2 and preferably SP2 slipstreamed into the main install CD to get maximum support from LBA48.
I am still a bit hazy with the technicalities but if Dell didn't sell that PC with XP SP1/2 installed then the drive will have corrupted itself when it reached the 137 GB limit, but my explanation depends upon whether I have understood the LBA48 problem correctly.
Can someone confirm please.
