Confused Problems with my CD-ROM/DVD-ROM drives

Basically, both my CD-ROM and DVD-ROM drives stop working. They open, but when I put ANY type of media in either one (audio CD, software, DVD, etc.), it's not detected. Apparently Windows successfully loaded the device driver, but "cannot find the hardware device (Code 41)".

Perhaps I need to uninstall the drivers? Or does this require a complete hardware replacement?

Buy the way, I'm using Windows XP Home Edition Version 2002 Service Pack 2 and the computer's a Sony Vaio PCV-RZ54G.

Thanks.
