Have followed the fixes and it appears that it has done the trick for me!!
I ran Adaware and got just 12 negligable objects (MRU list) and when i ran spybot got two items each associated with windows security - firewall and anti-virus - my mcAffee wanted me to delete them placing Mcaffee as the sole security program. so i had spybot delete them. OK?
none of the other problems i was experiencing have returned!! I have my computer back!!
