Video codec problem after problem

please forgive the following as it may be murky.

i have a Dell latitude cpx with windows 2000

suddenly problems have arisen when watching videos in all my players(windows media/windows media classic/vlc/divx etc) the sound was crisp then muffled, then loud background scratching(or the like). Moreover the image would slow down out of sync with audio or stop all together then jump about.

the windows player cited a codecs error so i downloaded new ones and they didnt work, i thought i'd cracked it when windows player(none of the others changed) seemed to be working fine, until i clicked onto full screen and it was merely half sized and pushed to the left middle... tried everything logical to sort it and nothing.

Any info on the problem in hand, or better codecs or media players or whatever will be greatfully recieved.

thank you
