the leds indicate all on initially and then the hard drive goes amber. The right hand led remains green (not sure what that is?) The speakers hiss but thats it. I woiuld expect to get some indications if the hard drive was defective but it makes no difference if fitted or not.

laptop seems to get power through post if the HD indicator shows movement/ now why no display? /
