i'm not aware that ghost is capable of file recovery, try
pc inspector to do that. i've used ghost 2002 and i would boot to a floppy disk, so technically speaking it doesn't need to be installed on any HD you are cloning to/from. i do have it installed to run norton ghost explorer, to browse an image file saved to a HD. this is not needed though.
