Problem with Laptop cable connection (wired)

Hello, I recently bought 2 Dell Inspiron E1705 notebook's around $2500 and I try connecting both to my upstairs ethernet cable hooked on cable but both still say unplugged. As of now, the cable is being used for my old desktop but now that I have upgraded to laptops I want then connnected via ethernet. I remember I had a similar problem with my desktop back in the day where the speed was too high(100 mbps i think) and somehow lowered it to 10 mbps and works perfect..I have no idea on how to do this with my laptops..the same connection in my basement works fine with my laptop's but not the one upstairs??

sorry for the not so detailed description but can someone help me asap!
