I think Sony is a ripoff in general.

Acers are an extreme bargain, especially if you're looking in the desktop replacement category. Dell has some good offers, some of which are worth looking at, but I don't know. If the price was right, I would go for them, but Dell just isn't what it used to be. Same thing with toshiba- I used to love their laptops, but recently their customer service has started to suck, and their machines are getting overpriced.

If you really want a quality notebook, check out the Acer Aspire 5672WLMi at newegg- it's on sale for 1069 and has a Core Duo 1.66 processor, 1GB of ram, a 120GB hard drive, and Mobility Radeon X1600 graphics. A really awesome machine. I've had one for the past month or so, and I'm quite pleased with it. The only thing I would watch out for is the fact that it tends to put out a ton of heat, as is the case with most high-performance laptops. Other than that, its only weak points are that it comes with very little bundled software, no OS CD, and the HD is split into two 60GB FAT32 partitions.
