Since you can detect it in My Computer, it is still active and this is not a driver issue. I think it is a mechanical issue. My best guess would be the servo to electrically release the holding mechanism has broken. For more details:

1. Does the drive's light blink/Does the drive work when you insert a CD after the manual eject?
2. Is the device user replaceable? (ie. swappable drive)

Pressing the button would have nothing to do with a driver, as it is a command to activate the servo. In Linux however, the CD will not eject until it is unmounted or ejected via software. Windows does not exhibit this behavior
