Cry toshiba m35x laptop won't power on---help!

Hi, new to this site and to the laptop world so please if posting advice, do so in an amateur way. My dad gave me his Toshiba m35x-s149 laptop that he purchased from best buy in 10/04. It powered up and worked fine for a week and then didn't power up again. Bought a brand new battery, fully charged it as indicated by the green light in front as well as plugged in the adapter and when I push the power button, nothing happens. I've tried holding it for a while and took the battery out and replaced, etc. and NOTHING. When I push the cd music symbol button, that lights up and the fan runs but still a black screen and no blue light when hitting the power button. Please do not tell me the motherboard has gone, I desparately need this laptop to work and the $100+ battery already broke the bank. Any advice greatly appreciated as toshiba said I need to pay $35 just for them to advise me what to do next and then I would have to pay a place to repair, since the warranty has long expired. Thanks for any help...Pam
