I agree the grease application is fiddly & messy, but the good thing is you will never need to worry that your heatsink isn't getting all possible heat transferred to it.

I also agree that the 1394 connection isn't doing anything. I've disabled mine but haven't been able to get completely rid of it.

Lack of device detection by the BIOS didn't make sense to me, unless your devices were attached to the VIA PRI/SEC_RAID1 port. Those indeed might not be detected without the aid of extra drivers installed at the F6 reminder. But somehow you got it sorted out.
