A friend of mine gave me his broken laptop to check out. It is a Compaq Presario 900. He told me that it was working well until one day he tried to turn it on and it wouldn’t work. When I plug it in the light that indicates that it is receiving power turns on. When I turn the laptop on, the power light lights up but nothing happens. The hard drive doesn’t spin, the screen stays blank, there are no beeps to indicate that it is able to POST… nothing.
I’ve tried the following things with no success:
- Removing the hard drive
- Removing the RAM
- Switching the two sticks of RAM and trying each one in each slot
- Crossing my fingers and then turning it on
- Removing the battery
Since none of these had any effect and the laptop won’t POST, I think it’s probably a problem with the motherboard. One other detail in case it matters is that the laptop is originally from France. At first I thought it might be a power issue since there is a voltage difference between there and here (Canada), but I ruled that out since the laptop says it’s rated for 100V to 240V. Also, he was able to use it successfully in North America for over a year.
Can anyone recommend anything else I can try or check?
