Hi, and welcome to TSF!
This is strange, I doubt the ethernet cable could have carried a surge since it does not carry power, and even if it did, it couldn't get transfered into the monitor. I think its just a coincidence. If all the monitor ever shows is the image you are describing but an external display works, then its definatley a display problem. You could use an external monitor, but I would contact the manufacturer for help.
